Methodology

Action 1: Creation of a Local office – Analysis of the current situation regarding the management of water resources in Jordan

Sub-activities:

  • Create a local office
  • Analysis of European and Jordanian legislation on water resources management
  • Analysis of the current situation in relation to managing water resources

Deliverables:

  • Local office staffed with two people.

  • Technical report on (a) the current situation in the field of water resources in Jordan (quantity, spatial distribution, availability, etc.) and (b) report including of a comparison of the Jordanian with the European legislation on water and proposing improvements if deemed necessary and proposals of.

Action 2: Presentation and analysis of the current situation regarding the management of brackish water in Jordan

Sub-activities:

  • Assessment of availability and quantitative / qualitative characteristics of brackish water in Jordan
  • Identify and assess the current situation on the brackish water treatment and evaluation of the available treatment technologies used at international level

Deliverables:

  • Technical report on (a) the quantity and characteristics of brackish water and (b) the current situation in Jordan on their management.
  • Technical report that includes a review and comparative evaluation of brackish water treatment technologies that are applicable worldwide.

A3: Study and design of a prototype, autonomous energy, integrated pilot system for treating brackish water.

The system includes modules:

  • microfiltration (MF)
  • reverse osmosis (RO)
  • chlorination
  • photovoltaic system

In this action, which will last four months the design of the pilot system will be completed. This action includes the reverse osmosis unit, chlorination unit and photovoltaic system.  

Deliverables:

  • Detailed drawings of the individual parts of the system (mechanical, electromechanical, static drawings, etc.)
  • Technical report on the technical specifications of the system.

A4: Construction of a pilot system for the treatment of brackish water

Sub-activities:

  • Construction of the system microfiltration (MF) – reverse osmosis (RO) -chlorination
  • Construction of a photovoltaic system
  • Assembling the whole pilot system

Deliverables:

Construction of a fully operational pilot system based on the standards set in Action 3 on the area of implementation.

A5: Operation of the pilot system

In this action the operation of the pilot plant will begin and tested for a period of 10 months. The system will be tested under different conditions by altering the basic operating parameters.

Deliverables:

  • Technical report on the results obtained during the 10 month trial operation of the pilot system.

A6: Evaluation of the pilot operation and optimization of the system’s performance

Sub-activities:

  • Optimization of the system’s performance. The system’s performance must be optimized regarding: (a) the quality of the water, (b) the minimization of membrane fouling (c) the minimization of the energy requirements.
  • Estimation of the system’s performance
  • Preparation of an operation and maintenance manual

Deliverables:

  • Technical report on the system’s efficiency and cost – benefit analysis
  • Technical report on the optimized operating conditions of the system
  • System’s operation and maintenance manual

A7. Suggestions for implementing on a large scale – Evaluation of the system’s environmental and economic performance

Sub-activities:

  • Preparation of  techno – economical study for a large scale system.
  • Proposals to implement the system on a large scale
  • Identification of the areas with drought problems in the Mediterranean in which the model large scale system can be applied

Deliverables:

  • Techno-economic study for implementing the system on a large scale
  • Technical report which will contain guidance – proposals to implement the   system on a larger scale, covering the needs of other areas

A8. Educational Activities

The action will last two months. To successfully operate a pilot plant, the personnel must be trained properly. Additionally, through the organization of seminars and conferences, workers in the pilot system will enrich their knowledge on the processes

Deliverables:

  • Educational material

A9. Dissemination of project results

Sub-activities:

  • Creation and update of the progam’s website. The site should include: (a) General information about the program, (b) The deliverables of the program, (c) Meetings, conferences, educational materials from the seminars, (d) Photographs of the system, (e) Useful links and ( g) Information about the partners of the program.
  • Organization of visits to the unit
  • Organizing an international conference in Jordan
  • Creating and distributing information material

Deliverables:

  • Website
  • Printed informational material brochures
  • Proceedings of international conference

A10. Management of the program – reporting to Hellenic Aid and Greek consulate

Sub-activities:

  • Management of the program and its actions
  • Report on Hellenic Aid and the Greek Consulate in Jordan. This sub-activity aims to a regular reporting on the technical and economic progress of the program in Hellenic Aid and the Greek Consulate in Jordan.
  • Monitoring and evaluation
  • Financial management of the program

Deliverables:

  • Progress reports
  • Intermediate reports
  • Final report
